A New Call for Applications for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award

--------------------------
One of the aspects that particularly distinguishes excellent universities in the way they are perceived internationally, is that at these universities you can find outstanding foreign researchers cooperating with colleagues. By granting the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award, currently one of the most valuable academic awards in Germany, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers a singular opportunity to top-rank junior researchers from all disciplines from abroad who want to set up their own junior research groups at research establishments in Germany. We are thus very pleased to be able to announce the award once again (applications by 4 January 2008).
The award allows the winners to carry out academic work under unparalleled conditions: the young researchers are able to spend five years working at an institute of their own choice in Germany, untroubled by administrative constraints, and build up their own groups of junior researchers.
The Kovalevskaja Award is a pecuniary sign of faith in top-flight talent who are granted risk capital for their innovative projects at an unusually early stage in their careers. They are being rewarded for outstanding talent, above-average initiative and a creative approach to research.
The award money of up to 1.65 million EUR each comes from funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The programme addresses outstandingly-qualified junior scientists and scholars from all disciplines from abroad who completed their doctorates less than six years ago. This includes German academics working abroad.
We should be very pleased if you would disseminate the announcement so that the researchers who are in contact with you can draw the attention of junior scientists and scholars they consider suitable to the award. Details of the application procedure for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award can be found on our website. Please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Thomas Hesse (0228-833-119, thomas.hesse@avh.de
Sincerely,
Dr. Georg Schuette
Secretary General of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Hopefully that you are one of the chosen ones for this prestigious award.
